Something I loved from this book:
After I finished reading this one, I went on facebook, scrolling just to entertain my free time until I found a video of a deaf singer auditioned for American Idol. She was golden buzzed by Simon, and, it torn my heart apart listening to her stories, her lyrics, based on the life she is having, and the accident as the cause of everything that happened.
and i went downstairs to have a plain water after i found scattering albums on floor. my mother, managed some fantastic picture frames gifted by my sisters' weddings guests, to be completed with old photos. the port was emptiec because it was 1.54 am and everyone was asleep. I went there to see olf albums she grabbed from old cabinets, and there re my photos, my family's, family members' friends, photos of young Ma and Abah before they even got married, and they were all taken before 2008 (because we exactly bowed down to digital cameras in this epoch, and photos were kept in computer gallery and no more slayed on filmrolls.)
Since the novel I just finished, was things related to past, how we failed to correct our mistakez in past, how they affected us in future, and how it ruined people's live and died without knowing the truth were very rueful to me.
And I sat down by the pieces of albums in mess, take them in my arms and leafed through every photos. we were, we, relatives, so closed together. Stick together and the way 10-yr-old-me hugged my father made me cried. It was no longer like then. we grew up. we became cold to each other (well we are still loving). Now we knew how to think, decipher each mistake and persisting on fixing them and the deed was unaccepted, and we raged to the fact. I hated the mean of myself my hot-tempered emotion inside I cant bear, the remorse I keep in my head, and the thought of keeping things just right the way world wants, is too painful. And today, we that stuck together, cried when separated (some went back to KL after having Eid celebration here at my home), was no longer here. I knew what I did, stiffenef the emotion till I no longer feel the ties we had was nothing to be cherished.
If we did not love, we would not lose anything.
Getting straight to this novel, Erika found a WWII medal in her late mother's chest along with blood-stained baby uniform, and some blue diaries. She went to see Erik Frankel to ask about the medal and later he was found dead. The boys who broke into thr house reported the tragedy , and the coppers went there for interrogation. Erika and her husband (also one of the coppers) went deeper by meeting Elsy's (her mother) old friends. which aged around 70-80 yr old. Axel Frankel was called to come home for interrogation and the notification on his brother's death. Then they met Frans, one of the friends. and Kjell, a journalist, also a son to Frans.
Erika went to see Britta, a senile woman. She got confused and startef muttering somethings about soldiers, child. She was found killed later in a few days of a suffocation. (pillow). Then they werr things about Hans Olavsen, in Elsy's diaries. The coppers also checked every activities done by Axel and Erik, money transfer, call logs and so on.
She even went to Karina, her mother in law, patrik's mothet knowing from Karin, patrik's exwife that her mother kept the remaining diaries. Elsy was cold to Erika and Anna but she heard from Axel, that Elsy was a softhearted girl ever. The last chapter unfolded when we all knew that Axel was kidnapped by soldiers in 1944, and hurt by some soldiers.
Elsy was in love with Hans, the stowaway her father rescued on boat, was told that he ran away from the war. her father died in mine, and her mother Helma changed to a more grimaced creature. Elsy and Hans made love, pregnated, and they promised to stay til the war ended, Hans needed to leave awhile to see his family. Before he left, he went to see Erik he knew closed to Elsy, to take care of her if something happened to him. Frans and Britta were there as weell as Axel who was just liberated off the war-things-restrainment-alike. Axel saw Hans, discovering that he s the one that left an impact on his ears while in prison, torturing them. He knocked him and pummeled him. Frans Britta and Erik were mad when they finally thought Elsy was pregnated by a bastard. He died eventually and they put him in a grave contented with toppled soldiers which were named with 'ignito milito' which means The unknown soldier.
In the pictures of Erik's corpse, which was seated behind the desk, Erika could see the word Ignito milito on the notepad. She made a research and found them on the graveyards. They made exhumation and found the dead bodies
Axel finally gave statements, he d killed Erik because he wanted to tell the truth after six decades, i repeat, SIX DECADES rhey werre holding the secrets, Frans suicided, all because of the remorse they had.
The kid born, was adopted by someone. Elsy was sixteen and became unaccepted by her own mother. At the end of the story, Erika did some more researches to find her half-bro, and then made to connect the issue on money transfer to this case. At first, the money was gradually transacted from Erik to Wilhem (new character) but dead and they went to talk to Marta, the wife and Garon the son. they went home appalled with no results they expected. (in the mid of the story).
At the end of it, it was found that Erik funded Garon's living as he promised to Hans.
and we knew, Elsy was sent away, not knowing that Hans was obliterated to death, and thinking how fool she was to love blindly. That was the reason of the coldness she showered on her daughters Erika and Anna. because she was afraid of loving more. And she died over an accident, with no acknowledgements about all these secrets and it hurt me, a lot.
To Camilla Lackberg, despite the different language I read, your craft were excellent!! By the synopsis on the back cover, I did not know that this fiction would be such meaningful . Since it tells about THE SECRETS BEHIND WARS , i think the fact-based and gov-issued would not attract me. but it was not all about war. its about
family.
