Kinsey Millhone, in the same series like I read L for Lawless, worked as private investigator in Santa Teresa. He found a friend from California Fidelity, telling that a guy who was declared dead, finally emerged to real life named Wendell Jaffe. She went around for further investigation,  met his wife, who had accepted half a million over his death insurance, couldnt be able to accept his presence because she literally needed the money. If wendell was really found alive, the money needed to be returned.

She went to Mexica in trailing the dead living man, using ex-husband of Renata's passport, Dean Huff, a mexican. She met Renata, sneaking into their bedroom and returned to the States back. The surprising thing was the moment where Kinsey found her relatives, that she knew she'd been living alone all these years.

Renata was the lover of Wendell after e left Dana Jaffe. When Brian, Wendell's kid, juvie, released with counterfeited warrant, Kinsey had an instict about Wendell to be in this connection. She made way to Michael's house (his son too) and found he with mic's baby. When Kinsey took Wendell outside for a talk, a shoiting attack hit them and suddenly Wendell was gone.

Wendell was lost, suspected stealing Carl Eckert's boat, and Renata's car. But after deep scrutiny, it was found that Renata stood behind every single martyr job. She lkilled Wendell because she knew wendell would return to the family leaving her.
